Financial Aid Loans and Assistantships
Assistantships
A limited number of graduate assistantships are available to assist students with educational costs. Assistantships require at least 20 hours of work each week in a specified campus office. Compensation for the assistantship is equal to the tuition of one graduate course per semester. Please contact your academic department to inquire if assistantships are available.
Music Graduate Assistantships
Graduate students in the Petrie School of Music may apply for a music graduate assistantship. Graduate assistantships consist of a waiver of University tuition and may also carry a stipend. Each assistantship carries specific duties and responsibilities. Learn more about Music Graduate Assistantships.
Federal Loans
The Federal Direct Loan Program is a low-interest loan made to you in two possible forms. Graduate students who qualify for federal direct loans are able to borrow up to the maximum cost of attendance or $20,500 per year, whichever is less. You will need to complete the FAFSA to see if you qualify for loans. More information can be found on the direct loan website.
Please note: Students MUST be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours as of the last day to add a course each term in order to qualify for a federal direct loan. Students enrolled in less than 6 credit hours are NOT eligible to receive federal direct loan funds.
South Carolina Teacher Loan
To encourage talented and qualified S.C. students to enter the teaching profession, the State of South Carolina developed the Teachers Loan Program to assist students with college expenses. The loans can be canceled at the rate of 20% per year by teaching in S.C. public schools in state-designated areas of critical needs. Applications are available online. The deadline for applying is April 30.
Federal TEACH Grant
The TEACH (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education) Grant is a federally funded program for students who plan to teach in both a critical subject and critical geographic area. The grant is currently $3,708 per year; however, it converts to a loan with accrued interest if certain conditions are not met.
